And I found myself struck not by the quality of the movie (it was exactly what you’d expect from the company that created Minions), but by something I didn’t expect at all: the most explicit expression of nihilism I’ve ever seen in a children’s film. I want them to grow their own love for film - a love distinct from my personal preferences. Movie, I try to keep my opinions to myself. ![]() But when my two boys are genuinely excited for a movie, as they have been for The Super Mario Bros. Like most parents of young children, I have my share of hot takes about which kids’ movies are great ( My Neighbor Totoro, Moana) and which are not ( Minions: The Rise of Gru, Frozen).
